Regatta Info

Regatta - Under 18/School rowers

Some info about what happens when we go to Regatta (Karapiro)

When away on Regatta, we are a crew
  • We travel as a crew
  • We camp as a crew
  • We eat as a crew

Boat loading:

This happens the day before we leave for Regatta, its when the boats/gear is loaded onto the trailers, ready for travel. All rowers attending the Regatta are expected to attend "BOAT LOADING"

  • You will need a 10mm ring spanner  - does not have to be flash, it just needs to be 10mm and in your hand at every boat loading/unloading event
  • It can take approx 2 hours for BOAT LOADING

Travel Day:

We usually leave early (anywhere from 6.30 to 7.30am) Usually from either the SHEDS or the ARMY HALL. This is specified in the comms leading up to the Regatta.

  • When travelling - it's good for rowers to either take a packed lunch, or money to buy food on the way.

Travel time:

Travel time to Karapiro is anywhere from 5.5 to 6.5 hours. Traffic, stops and roadworks all play a part.

Karapiro - Mighty River Domain:

Once we arrive, the rowers are organised into teams to complete various tasks. It's a pretty busy afternoon.

  • Boat unloading & re-rig (So we can race)
  • Raise the Marquee (So the world knows that the GISBORNE ROWING CLUB has arrived, it's our basecamp)
  • Pitching of tents (So we have somewhere to sleep)
  • Kitchen gets set up (So we can eat)

Racing:

Race day is very busy, exciting, organised chaos. Coaches manage race day.

Nutrition:

Catering is provided for the entire team.

  • HYDRATION is vital, chilled water is made available, it is very important to keep your hydration up
  • Food is available from the kitchen throughout the day

Medical:

  • GRC has basic FIRST AID on hand at all times
  • For all large events, a MEDICAL TENT or Ambulance is on site during RACE DAY

Return travel:

We depart either in the afternoon of the last day of racing, or after checkout the following day.

  • Boat trailer is loaded
  • Break camp (Tents & Marquee to come down)
  • Kitchen/Chalets are cleaned & gear packed
Tip - When your rower returns home, they will be shattered. Feed them, get them to bed. Try not to have anything organised for them to do when they get home, chances are they will fall asleep while doing it.
Actually, that applies to Parent help as well.
